Why subscribe?
Well you don’t have to do anything if you don’t feel like it, but subscribing gives me a serotonin boost and it gives you full access to my writing. And you’ll never miss a piece!
If you want to support me and my writing, the most meaningful way to do that is to read and engage with my work. It means a huge deal to me. You can also buy my books and upgrade to a paid subscription, which I am also grateful for. Thank you!
but what am I subscribing to?
Aphrodisia is a blog by Monika Radojevic (me) which houses all my favourite genres: literary fiction, poetry and non-fiction. I write about my life as a full-time writer who has just moved to Berlin as well as women, feminism, reading & writing, politics, pop-culture and the media.
Aphrodisia is unpredictable, I will admit, but it always delivers.
but who are you?
I’m a Brazilian-Montenegrin writer and poet who was born and raised in London. I spent years working in the feminist political sector, and my writing is a continuous exploration of power, darkness and freedom. To date, I am the youngest ever winner of the MerkyBooks New Writers' Prize, and I’ve published two books with MerkyBooks (a Penguin Random House imprint). My debut poetry collection, teeth in the back of my neck, came out in 2021. My debut short story collection, A Beautiful Lack of Consequence, came out in March 2025, and my debut novel, Strangerland, comes out in 2026. I am also very melodramatic, and occasionally uncouth.
Some people have said that I am funny at times. Other people that I bribed have described my work as a 'vital contribution to literature,' ‘tender, humorous and moving,’ 'uncompromisingly fierce,' ‘lyrical and imaginative’ and ‘so sharp-edged they could draw blood.’ Woah.
but you’ve called it Aphrodisia. Where’s the sex?
Ah yeah, there’s definitely some sprinkled around here but if you’re after some delicious smut, then this isn’t for you! I wanted a title that would convey yearning, passion and desire because that’s often how I read and write - in an all-consuming, urgent kind of way. Always hungry for more. Pretentious, I KNOW. But I can’t help it if I love big….words.
but who are your favourite writers?
Carmen Maria-Machado, Deborah Levy, Arundhati Roy, Angela Carter, Rachel Yoder, Leslie Jamison, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Nora Ephron, Audre Lorde, Miranda July, Mary Oliver, Maya Angelou, Jenny Kleeman, Sayaka Murata, Clarice Lispector, Joan Didion, Lydia Davis, Jia Tolentino, Laura Bates, Elfriede Jelinek.
but what about the men?
I don’t understand the question.
but what do I do now?
Subscribe, goddammit
